Restrictive DOC stated that a Chianti must be composed of 70% Sangiovese and at least 10% local wine grapes. Some creative winemakers believed a mix of some international grapes like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the usage of French barrel enhance the flavor and quality of their masterpiece. Because the DOC regulations were not met, these wines could only be labeled as “table wines”. Robert Parker created a new term “Super Tuscan” which designates a great Tuscan wine, that did not conform to any specific DOC designation. Today, Tignanello is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.
